SIS Continues To Innovate And Maintain Focus On Interoperability

In an economic environment in which hospital budgets are tight, debts are mounting and new projects are postponed, Surgical Information Systems (SIS) continues to invest in perioperative solutions that help health organizations to optimize revenues, reduce costs, improve patient safety and ensure compliance.

The current economic downturn is making it extremely difficult for hospitals to obtain capital for new and existing projects. According to the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), management teams should be looking to implement systems that will show a swift ROI. The financial health of most hospitals depends upon it. SIS understands the critical role the operating room plays in the business of running a profitable hospital organization.

A newly enhanced SIS Solution was unveiled this week with improved features that enable hospitals to realize a more immediate ROI through increased charge capture and reduced costs. Technology upgrades and several product enhancements provide a lower total cost of ownership for SIS clients and improve future scalability of SIS products, paving the way for quick and effective functionality upgrades in the coming years.

"As a surgical partner, SIS continues to provide tangible benefits that help us to optimize revenues and improve patient safety in the perioperative department," said Ochsner Health System CMIO Lynn Witherspoon, MD. "We have worked to expand the SIS Solution across the entire enterprise in recent years so that more of our facilities can realize the financial and operational benefits. We are very impressed with the direction of SIS technology and can readily see the benefits through both improved safety and efficiency."

Continued demonstration of SIS' commitment to interoperability is evidenced by SIS Anesthesia's completion of the 2009 IHE North American Connectathon, a massive testing event for interoperability in the healthcare IT industry. The Connectathon is a prerequisite for involvement in the Interoperability Showcase at the HIMSS Conference, where systems from multiple vendors exchange information and share data securely.

In addition, recent enhancements to the SIS Solution have further improved patient safety through the addition of drug decision support for the perioperative department. Facilities can now support default adult and pediatric dosages, contraindication alerts, hyperlinks to drug manufacturer suites and integration with the commercial drug database underlying the system. Enhanced drug capabilities provide for improved visibility and control over the management of invasive lines and intake and output balance. These improvements have further supported the system's unparalleled ease of use, resulting in better accuracy, decreased waste and increased adoption by clinicians.

"I am impressed with SIS' newly enhanced features and I believe they will contribute greatly to the reliability and accuracy with which we document patient care," said Dr. Marc Paradis, an anesthesiologist at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut and beta user of the newest SIS enhancements. "The SIS integrated perioperative product ensures regulatory compliance and allows us to spend more time focused on the care of our patients, which in turn increases the level of patient care and safety."

About SIS

SIS provides software solutions that are uniquely designed to add value at every point of the perioperative process. Developed specifically for the complex surgical environment, all SIS solutions - including anesthesia - are architected on a single database and integrate easily with other hospital systems. SIS offers the only surgical scheduling system endorsed by the American Hospital Association (AHA), and a rules-based charging system that has been granted Peer Reviewed status by the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
